The PCL Insider: News From The Capitol
SPOTLIGHT ON PROPOSITION 89 – CLEAN MONEY AND FAIR
ELECTIONS
Special interest money has polluted our elections. Since
1989, oil and gas, electric utilities, mining, chemical, and the
auto manufacturing industries have poured over $365 million into
federal campaigns and party coffers. That's 30 times as much as
was contributed by environmental groups over the same time
period.
California politics suffers a similar fate. Every
election, polluting industries bankroll local and state
politicians. Once elected, these politicians pay back their
donors by attacking essential environmental protections and
wasting taxpayer dollars through industry giveaways.
That's why the Planning and Conservation League has joined
other environmental groups like Sierra Club California,
Environment California, Greenpeace, and Rainforest Action
Network to support Proposition 89 and fight special interest
money.
Proposition 89, the California Clean Money and Fair Election
Act, is all about cleaning up the way political campaigns are
run.
Here's how it affects you as an environmental voter:
Strict Contribution Limits will end the
fundraising madness with constitutional limits so environmental
voters aren't drowned out by big money.
Clean Money Full Public Financing of Political
Campaigns will level the playing field so environmental
candidates can win on their ideas and convictions. Candidates
who choose the public financing route will be financed by a .2
percent increase in corporate taxes.
Tough Disclosure and Enforcement will
require wealthy candidates to disclose their expenditures, keep
politicians from hiding behind negative ads, and punish
politicians who violate the law.
California voters overwhelmingly support greater
environmental protections. When we clean up politics,
politicians will finally listen to the electorate and institute
policies that put the environment and public health first.
Please help us "Buck the System!" to clean up corruption
in politics.
