Proposed State Park Closures

California’s network of state parks is slated to take a massive hit in the governor’s proposed budget, forcing the closure of 48 parks.  Conservation groups and hundreds of local citizens have come together to fight the proposed cuts.

California faces looming budget crises for the upcoming 2008-2009 fiscal year, which begins July 1. An expected deficit of nearly $14.5 billion prompted the Governor to call for a Special Legislative Session earlier this year to identify mid-year cuts in current spending that help close the huge budget gap before it gets out of control.

In February, the Legislature did manage to cut spending enough to reduce the expected deficit by half, but failed to enact legislation to bring in any new revenue.

The deficit also prompted the Governor to call for significant cuts to nearly all state agencies and programs. Natural resource agencies that are heavily dependent on General Fund allocations would be particularly affected, facing severe reductions in personnel and services. The most dramatic example is the proposed closure of 48 state parks throughout California.

The Legislative Analysts Office (LAO) reviewed the Governor’s proposed budget, and it took the unprecedented step of outlining proposals to help close the nearly $8 billion budget gap. The LAO proposal included raising some fees and instituting new ones to help avoid some cuts to natural resources and environmental protection programs

It is now up to the State Legislature to develop a final budget proposal before the June 15th deadline.
