  Tejon Celebration a Success

On Saturday, October 18th PCL had a small celebration at the Old Headquarters of Tejon Ranch. Board members, guests and friends of PCL drove to the remote location at the southern end of the Central Valley to enjoy a wonderful afternoon on the Ranch.

Traci Sheehan, Executive Director of PCL, welcomed the roughly 30 participants to the Ranch to celebrate. In May 2008, PCL and four other environmental organizations signed a Conservation and Land Use Agreement that set a conservation bottom line, by preserving 240,000 acres (90%) of the Tejon Ranch. PCL Board Member Terry Watt and General Counsel Gary Patton were instrumental in this achievement and their efforts were applauded by attendees.

Mike White, a Tejon Ranch Conservancy representative, shared the remarkable story of how the Agreement came to be, relayed stories about the importance of this landscape and was available for questions that focused on the diverse and unique biology of the land. With the help of an eight foot map, Mike outlined the significance of the preservation because of its connections to the Sierra Nevada and Coast Mountain Ranges, the Antelope and Central Valleys.

After the short presentations, most guests drove to a forest of valley oaks a few miles from Old Headquarters where they spent some time wandering amidst the magnificent trees. With hundreds of years of growth behind them, the valley oaks were an important reminder of the legacy of this Agreement. From red tailed hawks to golden eagles, deer to coyotes – in a short span of time we were able to see some of wildlife that reside on the Ranch.

After the walk, guests enjoyed a wonderful barbeque and heard from PCL Board President Bill Center. In addition to celebrating the success of the Agreement, PCL launched the California Legacy Society. Bill noted that the Society was created to recognize individuals and trusts that give at the $1,000 level or more each year. Several of the founding members of the Society were present to receive a special acknowledgment and a vest with both PCL’s name and the Society’s name embroidered on it.

Lynn Sadler, PCL Board member, concluded the event by acknowledging how important it was to save this land and how difficult it was. She, like many others, is very proud of PCL’s efforts.

Thank you to all who were able to attend and a special thank you to the Tejon Ranch Company for its hospitality.
