Global Warming and California Waterways (05-01-08)
Global warming is taking a toll on California waterways, according to a new report from the National Wildlife Federation and the Planning and Conservation League Foundation. The report called, On the Edge: Protecting California’s Fish and Waterfowl from Global Warming was released May 1st. PCL was invited to talk with Capital Public Radio about the report and water issues.

New Report Warns of Impacts to Fish and Birds (05-01-08)
The National Wildlife Federation and Planning and Conservation League Foundation report details global warming threat to California’s $8.2 billion outdoor recreation economy. At risk are river, wetland, and coastal habitats, home to fish, waterfowl, and other birds that annually contribute to $8.2 billion of spending in California and attract more than 8.1 million wildlife watchers, 1.7 million anglers and 284,000 hunters.

Water Efficiency Security Act Passes First Legislative Committee (04-17-08)
Watch PCL’s Mindy McIntyre testify before the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources in support of AB 2153 (Krekorian/Hancock) the Water Efficiency Security Act. AB 2153 will ensure that California secures water supply reliability as we accommodate growth. Key Environmental Bill Passes Senate Environmental Quality Committee
April 15, SB 1165 (Kuehl) passed the Senate Committee on Environmental Quality with support from Senators Florez, Lowenthal, Steinberg, and its author Shelia Kuehl, who sits on the committee. It is now headed to the Senate Appropriations Committee. SB 1165 ensures greater transparency in the creation of draft Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs) and requires EIRs older than five years to be reviewed again for new impacts before they can be used to approve a project.

California Impacted by Congressional Budget Decisions (04-01-08)
From water quality to fire protection, the decision Congress makes over the next two weeks on the fiscal 2009 Budget Resolution will have a major effect on California’s environment. Many aspects of California’s environment face a one-two punch, as programs that are already slated for deep spending cuts in the Governor’s budget may also lose significant federal funding.
