2009 Symposium Background

The Title
“Steps to a Sustainable California: Building Momentum for Real Change"

The Date
Saturday, February 7, 2009

The Theme
To ensure a sustainable future, we need to make real changes in how we live our lives, and how we organize our society. And we need to start making those changes right now – right here in California! The 2009 PCL and PCL Foundation Symposium will help us do just that!

The past successes of the environmental movement in California, and our present capabilities and dedication, put us in a unique position to help build the momentum our state needs to achieve a sustainable future.

Real change means a willingness to transform our transportation systems, our land use patterns, and water use. With the momentum building for real change, it seems natural to focus the 2009 Legislative Environmental Symposium around that same topic.

The Program & Proceedings
The Annual Symposium included dynamic keynote presentations, interactive panel discussions, “How To…” workshops, MCLE courses, and an evening awards banquet. During each of the three 75-minute sessions, every participant choose from one MCLE panel, two panel discussions, and two “How To…” workshops. After the Symposium, PCL and PCLF honored a few of California’s most effective, inspirational, and hard working environmental advocates at the awards banquet.

MCLE Credit
PCL and PCLF certify that this activity was approved for 4.75 hours of MCLE credit by the State Bar of California. The 4.75 MCLE credits include two plenary sessions and three panels as noted on the activity descriptions. These credits may not be claimed for required MCLE in legal ethics, elimination of bias, or the prevention, detection, and treatment of substance abuse or mental illness that impairs professional competence.

AICP CM Credit
AICP members earned Certification Maintenance (CM) credits for many activities at this event. When CM credits were available they are noted at the end of an activity description (with AICP) on our agenda. Each policy session and MCLE session have received approval for CM credit and each is worth 1.25 credits. More information about AICP's CM program can be found at www.planning.org/cm.

Sponsors
Our event would not have been as successful if it weren’t for the generous support and assistance from our many sponsors. Thank you!

Banquet and Award Winners
Each year PCL and the PCL Foundation wrap up our Environmental Legislative Symposium by honoring our "Environmental Heroes of the Year" at a gala awards banquet. This year we celebrated the work of five heroes: Senator Sheila Kuehl, Terry Watt, Green L.A., Elva Yañez, CREDO Mobile and Miguel Luna. More information on the award winners is available here.
