California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)

oak groveThe California Environmental Quality Act, known as CEQA, requires that the environmental impacts of proposed development projects be rigorously evaluated, and that feasible mitigation measures or alternatives be adopted prior to project approval. This environmental law has directly reduced or avoided substantial adverse environmental harm from hundreds of thousands of public decisions and development projects. At the same time, CEQA empowers local communities, provides valuable information to decision-makers, and promotes democratic participation by ensuring that public agencies make informed decisions—decisions with profound implications for the people of California and the California environment.

Having played a central role in the development of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), PCL and PCLF are committed to ensuring that the public is aware of CEQA, understand how it protects and involves local communities, and that members of the public are trained to be confident, effective CEQA participants.

PCL Fights Back Attack on CEQA
Business leaders are attempting to undermine CEQA, and to stop progress on global warming solutions. In a June 21st letter, business organizations say that action to stop global warming is "premature." They particularly target efforts by Attorney General Jerry Brown to use CEQA to address our global warming crisis. PCL Executive Director Gary Patton fights right back, with his own letter to the Governor, Senator Perata, and Speaker Núñez.
